Who uses Bias Head/Rack/Mini live with a guitar cabinet?

  • What are you guys doing to get more “thump” ?

I seem to be getting pretty good tones, but it seems like the big “feel it in your chest “ kinda thing is missing, even at very high volumes.

Is it just the nature of modeling?

Should I be using the graphic eq after the transformer section?

Is it something I shouldn’t even be concerned with because “the audience doesn’t feel that anyway?”

    Thoughts?

@johnnyeggz I always set the Master over 12 to get the punchy sound.

  • I’m just shy over 12:00, I’ll push it some more.
    Thanks

  • What I ended up doing was “working backwards”, I did some reading on “ EQing metal guitars” and using the parametric after the transformer section, added back some frequencies from 90hz on down.
    Totally did the trick.

I guess the PA guy will take the frequencys out again, but it’s what my old man ears are used to hearing, I’m a total digital amp noob.

  • Another thing I’ve done, and keep in mind, this is for a live setting with a real guitar cab, is to crank the transformer sections output as high as possible.

It seems to make it closer to “realness”

On the ToneCloud I put up a preset called 5153 v2 Live Use, give it a shot, gimme ya feedback (pun intended)

  • im using the bias mini live through cab and i am adding fx2pro what interface you using for live and is there latency issues

    thanks john

  • @jf1455 I don’t use any interface. I plug the head into a 4-12 and my pedalboard out front and in the loop.

I turn the PG gate off and use a pedal instead, as well.

  • "Should I be using the graphic eq after the transformer section?"

I use the graphic eq after the transformer section to get enough "Thump". The Sound with and without the eq is like day and night.

  • @fatkey I use the parametric, but if the Graphic sounds good, then it’s good. Yeah night and day difference for sure.

I hear you, that "thump" at first made me nearly jump out of my skin in my practice room. :-) I believe the EQ, cabs and pickups have more to do with it than you'd suspect.

You didn't say what git or cabs you're using, but I'm currently running mine through two 1x10" loaded (100w each) closed back 16 ohm bass cabs (one rewired in/out in for parallel 8 ohms) and with my early 80's Gibson semi with patent # pups I definitely get that “feel it in your chest “ sound. When I switch to a 2x12 (120w rated) open back cab that effect diminishes a lot. Also when running just one of the 10" bass cabs, that effect drops.

Some of my other gits from Ibanez, D'Angelico (modern) and even some later Gibson's have definitely less pronounced effect.

I also EQ mine with more bass and far less T,M,P than most would (think early mellow polytone amps) and that for sure has some effect, so your comment " added back some frequencies from 90hz on down" is spot on.

It's good to see you found a sweet spot, don't stop there, if you can experiment with other speaker cabs.

  • This is the reason why it would be great to have a separate output settings so that you can set it to fit different (thru special eq) real cabs around the market!
F.e. If you have a Matshall 1960a Lead (like i do) you just set it in the cab output to hear the same sound that you would get from the computer with cab sim on.
I really hope Positive grid ( @Felix ) is gonna give us this soon, as I use a lot my Mini Amp live and the sound I get using my real cab is wonderful, but not the same that you have in the original presets

  • I use various Marshall and Mesa 4-12s and Les Pauls.

I’m finding that using the parametric and starting a cut from 41 down, and a boost from 90 to 200 is pretty much where I wanna be.
I’m cutting to about-11, and boosting about +5

  • Little update:

I’ve lowered the boost at 100 to about + 3, and added a +2 boost to 320 and 640, the Q’s are all around .99

Seems to cut much better this way.

Have a look at my video from last night, the eq is doing stuff even at unity

  • @pipelineaudio Where is it?

  • @johnnyeggz
Could you post a picture of the eq settings please?
    Thanks!
