Smokey fire odor
-
Just received new spark 40 aug3 and it reeks real bad, as if it was in a smokey fire. Wondering if anyone else had this problem
-
Yes, like a full ashtray.
-
I havent noticed this with mine, but i'm not really close to it while i play. Do you have to be close up to it to smell it?
-
Oh, you don't have to be close. The smell practically knocked me down when I first opened the box. I've had it a little over a week and either I've burned all my smell receptors I have or the smell is about 10% of what it was. If I had to describe it, I'd say it was a burnt fake leather smell.

Supposedly new one on its way. Wiped down w febreeze and Lysol helped smell less
-
@jrusso7220 Hmm, I'll have to try that. Still smelling it after a few weeks. I'm sure it's all natural and not a health issue at all. :)
-
Mine smelled like that. It faded away after a week or so. I think that is how China cleaned up the air in Beijing for the Olympics several years ago. They stored all the smog in a warehouse, and ship a little out in every box.

Lol, thats referred to by the EPA as "Emissions Banking"

I think its a combination of the amp as a whole, and the strap. Though, the strap is rather nice. I wonder if its real leather?
-
A combination of fiberboard, glue, tolex, and leather that was quick-cured. Smells for sure. But I'm not sensitive, I smoked for 40 years.
This morning I thought it smelled a little bit like the mari-ju-wana. -
@floraliner I don't think it's the materials -- otherwise everybody's amp would smell. Mine has no smokey smell, has no smell at all. I've only had it a week and even brand new out of the box there was no smell. I bet that those who received an amp with a smokey smell got an amp that was in a container that was near some sort of fire.
-
@dhbailey Pretty sure that's the case. I've purchased tons of electronics in my life time and this is a smell I've never smelled before. Wiping it down with Fabreeze did help, but it's still slightly there.
-
@dhbailey - Well, it certainly doesn't have the Cotton Candy aroma of a new Les Paul (not that I would know).
Could be something due to the ramp-up in production, or, maybe they were stuck in Australia during the fires? -

In fact this piece of kit would likely not have near the issues It does were it made in Australia. Besides some people enjoy the aroma of a blue gum fire, which is hardly what people are describing as a stench like being stuck inside a French cafe with old men chain smoking Gauloise cigarettes. The stale smoke from those would drop a grizzly at 50 paces.
Cheers!

@floraliner I agree, it's the materials. Oftentimes these things are bagged and boxed before the glue, fiberboard, etc... has had a chance to off-gas at all. So it sits there in the bag/box with no chance to air out. Mine had that smokey smell (and the foam packing had that odd chemical smell that almost smells of mildew) as well. This isn't the first time I've encountered similar things either. I've had brand new guitar cases and amps show-up that smelled so strongly of glue I couldn't even keep them inside and eventually had to send them back when the smell didn't subside after a week or two.
That said, after having my amp out of the box and playing it daily for three weeks now the smell has all, but totally subsided. If I get right up to it I can still pick-up a trace of the smell and I'm sure in a bit more time it will be totally gone.
Hopefully others that have this smell issue will find theirs to be odor free in a couple of weeks as well.
With regards to the cause of the smell being due to the amps being in a container near a fire. I'm thinking not. The reason being is that only the amp itself (at least mine) has that smoky odor. If it were caused by smoke somehow getting into the shipping container then the box and all other contents would also smell of smoke. In my case they do not.
-
@radu7 - True that. Day 4, and the smell isn't so noticeable.
My playing time has at least doubled, my skills haven't. -
my one had a glue or new car smell, like it came right off the production floor
-
@crystalpit Mine smelled like it came off the production floor too, if there was a massive fire on the production floor. It was so strong it would burn the back of your throat, so not subtle at all. It's been a few weeks and it's tolerable at this point.

well we've all seen TV clips of people spraying that anti covid smoke everywhere...including workplaces... thats what it is then...
Anti Covid Quarantine Agent... it comes in orange liquid... ACQA19.0
