Feature Request: Volume Level Control on Amp
-
Most of the time I am dialing things in via Bias FX so this is the perspective here but I think it might apply to Bias amp somewhat too:
For the Bias Amp models in Bias Amp and Bias FX, I have always assumed that the 'Volume' control is like a 'real' amp Master volume where you get more power amp distortion, compression, saturation, etc, as you turn it up along with the volume.
So many times say I want a high gain Mesa tone: I will say boost a Dual Rect model with a relatively high preamp gain setting on the amp but leave the master in the '3-4' range to keep power amp response tight. Or I might dime a Marshall amp model to get more snarl from the power amp.
In this scenario, I need a volume control on the amp block that can simply raise or lower the signal level to level my preset to match my other presets without any change to power amp behavior as per the master volume setting.
Also, even worse: MANY amp matches are extremely loud. Even some of my own. These amps can be difficult to mix with other amps in a dual amp patch and many tonecloud amp models clip my output straight away when demoing them.
I have a number of techniques for dealing with this:
- If too loud add a Volume Pedal block and set it to a fixed position
- Make it a dual path and use the mixer as a volume control
- If there is post eq in the patch use the EQ's level
But really, what I want is a 'Level' control for the amp block. Is there one and I am just missing it? I don't want to change the app or plugin overall output level. I want a per preset per amp block level control to control volume of these stage without affecting virtual power amp behavior and I don't want to edit the amp model in Bias Amp just to set the level because I might change the master from patch to patch.
I have so many presets with either V pedals or weird mixer level setting because of this.

Yah, I've experienced this, and I just use a volume pedal. Or a flat graphic if boosting signal. Those are the real-world approaches. It comes out the same. In Bias, I use the cab level and post eq.
It's really strange the clean amps are so damn quiet. Unhearable if the master AND pre aren't on at least 6 or 9.

Yep, same. It is silly to put an EQ block in to control the volume of the amp block in the virtual world. I can't think of a single other amp sim VST that does not have a level control for the amp.
My guess? It was probably initially left off to save screen space on the mobile app and the interface wants to be consistent across platforms and the need presets to be consistent across platforms, too.

I meant PG seems geared toward real-world settings, for example not being able to insert anything between amp and cab. ....I hadn't thought of using an instance of Bias FX as a cab, then another vst (or another instance of FX if wanting to use FX modules) in-between for effects pre-cab.

Understood. I think it makes sense to align with 'real life' gear in terms of the modeling of sounds but there are lots of things in the recording/vst realm that are easy to implement, unobtrusive, and add a lot of usability. I think this is the reason that, like I said, virtually every other modeling product I have used including hardware units like my POD XT, AxeFx II, AxeFx Ultra, and Amplifire, all have this feature; along with every VST I have ever used... except Bias.
It is supremely useful for leveling presets. It is goofy that I have to go back through my preset and figure out where I made level reductions or boosts to compensate for the amp output level being wacky.
Here is another one for you that has no real world analog and most competing products do that i would like to see in Bias: Usually double clicking a control, especially one that is rotary knob type control, will 'reset' it to some default, usually either noon or zero. Hardware can't do this but I find it convenient when editing on virtual gear.

@elric : on your last, yah, that's in the dedicated request thread I have up.
