Spark Mini 1/8" to other connectors for different destination inputs.

Can someone tell me if I've correctly understood the different options for using the Spark Mini headphone output in MONO here?
If I want to connect the Spark Mini to something with a microphone input, I need to use a cable with 1/8" TRS male plug in the Spark and an XLR male at the other end and it needs to be wired as a balanced cable.
If I want to connect to something with a 1/4" input like:
- a DI box 1/4" input, or
- a physical mixing desk 1/4" instrument input, or
- an audio interface 1/4" instrument input,
then I need a proper 1/8" male TRS to 1/4" male TS summing cable, with resistors at the 1/4" end to prevent overload.
Or do those three asterisked things require different handling?
I recently connected a Spark Mini (headphone output set to mono) to an audio interface 1/4" input set to Instrument level using a 1/8" TS male-to-male mono cable and a 1/8" to 1/4" TS mono adaptor. I thought that was the correct chain of components, but the signal was massive and weirdly phased, which I think means I probably narrowly avoided destroying either one or both bits of equipment. I'm keen to make sure I don't do that again if that was the wrong config.
EDIT: I suspect the 1/8" to 1/4" adaptor might have been stereo to mono, rather than mono to mono, in which case I've done the classic error that requires a summing cable to prevent.
Is that right? I think I must be close to getting it.
