IRs - newbie
-
So I've been experimenting with loading IRs both right in the plugin and also after the plugin, using Logic's Space Designer and basically dragging the IR into the screen, or a similar setup in Studio One.
So let's say I start with a nice '94 MATCH DC V2 followed by a Green25 cabinet. in the plugin. I realize I can select from lots of cabinets at that point, and each of those is an IR already, right? Is there a difference between the IR for the speaker cabinet and say, for example, I have some other IRs that are created from other cabinets, just some free ones I found here and there, like the God's Cab ones that a lot of people seem to like.
What sounds best to me is to select a stock speaker in the plugin, which I assume is just the sound of the speaker, then add one of those God's Cab IRs which sounds less like the sound of a speaker than the sound of a space reacting to the sound of the speaker. Like at that point it truly sounds to me like I'm hearing an amp in a room and I can hear the thing rattling on the floor and all the air around the microphone.
Am I doing this wrong? If I select one of the factory IRs (Celestion_Mix_3.wav), it overwrites the name of the cabinet in the chain above, which would seem to imply that the IR for the space is the same as the cabinet.
Aren't there two kinds of IRs? Like the sound of the speaker and then the sound of the space? And if so, is it just like the wild west and you play around until something sounds right, or is there a better, top-down approach to doing this?
You can tell I'm not an engineer
Thanks in advance
