Latency with usb
-
Hi, I've a problem...I'm trying to record exercise by spark but I've latency problem:
I set spark as input/output, and plug my headphones in spark output.
I followed the tutorial in internet to set studio one, but if I turn on monitoring, when I play a guitar there is a lot of latency.
The only solution that I found is turn off the monitoring, and raise the volume output directly on the spare, so i hear the guitar directly from spark and not from daw.
There is another solution for latency? Because in this why I've to much thing to control and I've difficult to set correct volume
Thank in advance

I've also tried asio4all.
No difference...

@coloxim Have you tried a different DAW such as Bandlab's Cakewalk/Sonar? There will always be some latency because of the path the signal has to follow. Listening to your Spark, you get zero latency because you are hearing the sound as it is produced. But that same signal has to travel over the USB cable, be converted in your computer to data for the DAW which then has to send it to the DAC (digital-audio converter) for your soundcard to produce it as sound which then has to travel to your speakers. All that takes time. How much time depends on several factors, not least of which is the processing speed of your computer, the number of cores available for computing and how many background processes are running on the computer at the same time. An easy step to follow is to be sure to turn OFF your web-browser and your e-mail program. And shut down every possible program that is running either in the foreground, such as a word processor or spreadsheet or game, or running in the background.
Many people who use their computers for recording have no connections to the internet on that computer, and have turned off as many background processes as possible (you can hit ctrl-shift-esc to bring up Task Manager and you'll be amazed at all the junk running in the background!) so that only the barest minimum to keep the computer functioning are still running. That seriously cuts down on latency. But on a general purpose computer it's not easy to get to near-zero latency.

@dhbailey thanks for reply! I'll try to turn off everything.
I didn't tried different daw honestly.
I just thinking that use spark as input/out interface the latency was close to zero..
Probably my PC is not so performance...
Do you suggest to disable monitoring in the daw and listen the guitar directly from headphones in spark(such as direct monitoring, I've to use output knob)?
Because I want to use metronome/backing track in daw to register the guitar..
Do you think works in this way?
Recap:
-
Disable monitoring in daw
-
record guitar but listen the guitar directly from spark and set headphones volume with output knob in spark (last one)
-
listen the backing track from USB with headphones in spark and set the volume in headphones with ("Micro-knob")
-
set the volume input in daw with master knob
Is it correct?
Thanks for help

@coloxim What you outline would be my suggestion, but you'll have to run some short tests before committing to a major project. Try it -- just use the metronome click from your DAW and listen to the spark through the headphones and see if you can play along with it, without latency issues.

@dhbailey thanks for you support!
Ok, I'm trying to do it in this way... it's a little bit more complicated, but seems work..
Much better than use the monitor in daw...

@coloxim I'm glad you're able to get it to work -- it seems like it should be simple to do, yet for most of us home-bound musicians without multi-hundred-thousand-dollar dedicated studios, complicated is often necessary. Thanks for letting us know it's working for you.
