Which speaker for Bias Head?

  • Which Speakern would you recommend for a 4x12 box using with bias rack?

  • FRFR speakers in a cabinet, specially designed for FRFR usage are the way to go ;)

  • Thank you very much for your answer!
I‘m Quote new in the Amp modelling business 😉

Do you prefer a certain model?
What do you think about the eminence Delta 12a?

  • The Alto TS115A/TS112A seem to be very popular among users of ALL modelers and are cheap in comparison to the QSC K12 which also seems to be pretty popular but costs over twice as much. I haven't tried either myself.

Are you from Germany? If yes, their might be other recommendations.

    Grüße Sascha

  • Yamaha DXR10

  • Again, thanks a lot. Yes, I‘m from Germany ;-). I‘m sure you realized my Perfect english ;-).
Your Suggestion were all 1x12 boxes, am I right? Similar to pa Monitors. So, no chance for my 4x12 Box?

  • What I forgot: I have the powered bias rack. So I just need a passiv speaker...

You can use a 4x12 box just fine if you have one.

  • I loaded the 4x12 with old Celestion (g12h100). I like the sound without the cab-sim. But now I‘m thinking about loading it with more neutral speaker like the Eminence Beta 12 or some Eminence coax speaker to use it with an activated cab sim. Dos this make any sense?

In theory yes, in practice, not so much.

Cabinet simulation does not usually, and in the case of strict impulses, does not at all, model the dynamics of a speaker. At really loud levels, this isn't very much of a factor, which is why impulses tend to work very well, on flattish speaker systems.

At lower levels though and for not at all meant to be flat speakers, you would really have to first erase the sound and dynamic response of your speakers and only then apply a cabinet model.

FRFR speakers aren't perfect, for any definition of the term perfect, but they are miles and miles and miles beyond what the average single speaker can do.

I mean, try some cab impulses on your 4x12 if you really like (I actually know jazz guys who do exactly that, to get rid of the last bit of audible treble on their guitars, without feeling like they're turning EQ knobs "too far"), but for the most part, I would more eq the amp tone to your liking using your natural 4x12.

I LOVE FRFR setups, because then the soundguy can get the same signal from me to go to the PA (among many other reasons), but there is nothing wrong with using an actual 4x12!

  • Okay, thanks again! I‘m really learning... I‘ll try a frfr Box and I‘m really excited. Can anyone recommend a good passive frfr cab? And has anyone made some experiences with a Mesa Thiele Box combined with bias amp? I still have one with a c90, May be another speaker would be a good idea here? Evm 12 l?

  • @daniel-goerbing as a Guitar and Bass-Player I can recommend the new HR-Series from FMC, when it comes to passive and road-ready FRFR.

The guy behind FMC (Hans) has a very good standing in the scene and is a nice guy and pro, when it comes to professional build but affordable speakers.

  • I use mine with a 2x12 which has vintage 30s in and I have no complaints. Had this cab from before I got the bias head so can't say whether or not I would've gone FRFR had I not already had the cab but I've not had any thoughts of replacing the cab at all if that helps

  • I personally don't prefer full-range speakers and like to run the head through a guitar cab. A standard Marshall 1960 sounds great, but I currently use a Mojave 4x12 with Celestion G12H30 Anniversary speakers. It sounds phenomenal.

  • @all the guys running their bias through a guitar cab. Do you work with the cab sim or without? My original thought was to replace the old speakers of my 4x12 with more neutral ones, so that I can use the cab sim and at the same time I have that original 4x12 power blast sound 😉. But meanwhile I think these two things, cab sim and original power blast, exclude each other...

  • @Sascha-Ballweg Thank you for the link! Have you ever tried the 112? It isn‘t really cheap. An used one might be a good deal...

  • I use an Eminence Beta-12CX coaxial with PXB2:2K5CX crossover installed into a behringer monitor cabinet. I've never tested just how neutral it is but it sounds pretty good to me.

Please tell us about your budget, your playing style and if you are a gigging guitarist and if you like a personal monitor in front of you or a cab behind.

I use mine cab sim turned off, sounds a bit weird with cab sim on through a guitar cab
