Hi, I had the same issue but it was quickly and easily resolved by doing this:
When you see the message "can’t be opened because Apple cannot check it for malicious software." or "macOS cannot verify that this app is free from malware."

Go to System Preferences, and open Security & Privacy.
In the General Tab, under Allow apps downloaded from, you should see the app you've been trying to open – click on the Open Anyway button to its right.
The app should start to download.
