Real World Gear Testing (so you don't have to)
-
If you've been wondering why I have been mostly absent lately, its because I have been working on tests of claims by the Marketing Machine, forum "experts" and audio industry "educators"
I am especially tired of newcomers to our communities being told they have to spend tens of thousands of dollars on basic devices just to do basic recordings.
I was very curious about just how much "character" devices actually impart. Just how non linear are they?
I couldn't find an apples to apples comparison, so I have begun working on one. Here is the first one on Direct Boxes (so far)

@pipelineaudio It's awesome!

I just added the Behringer XR18 to the page. Its pretty much half of my Midas DL32. Its 16 mic pres, a remote controlled mixer, fx processor and 18 channel audio interface.
For 500 bucks.
This is one piece of gear I'm actually not sending back to the lender, I just bought it now.

Nice read. I too am really skeptical about some folks claims regarding DIs and instrument inputs on interfaces, so data wins. :-)
I found the analysis of the Focusrite gen2 interesting because a lot of internet critics seem to consider those to not be in the 'good enough' zone; and when I had one I thought it seemed quite solid. So it is nice to have my beliefs confirmed on that front. ;)
