Noise Gate Killing Sustain
-
Hi all,
Subject says it all.
I'm using the Bias FX noise gate which is generally not bad, only my sustain just gets completely crushed to zero signal once the sustain falls below a certain threshold. Its so sudden, like a switch. This behaviour renders it useless for certain lead sections, but I absolutely need a noise gate.
Any idea how I can solve this? Others have a similar issue?
Cheers.

Are you using a noise gate effect? Or the global noise gate (next to the snapshots...)? Their behaviour may be slightly different.
It does sound like the noise gate is doing what is it designed to do. I have gotten around this in the past by using a noise gate effect and compressor and playing with the sustain setting on the compressor and the threshold on the noise gate. It is often a trade off between reduced noise and tolerable sustain.
The other thing you can do is to use midi to turn off the noise gate when sustain is needed.

This is why ReaComp has a Hysteresis control

@paul-jones32 Cheers!
I'm using the noise gate effect pedal and the noise gate on the BiasAmp unit. I'll have a play again with compressor like you suggest.
"The other thing you can do is to use midi to turn off the noise gate when sustain is needed." - Aye, I had thought of this.

I’d love to hear how more people are using noise gates

@rob-edgerley I wonder if you are seeing an artifact from using 2 noise gates?

You are describing what a noise gate does for the most part it is essentially a gate that closes and kills the signal when it drops below a certain level, which is generally set to be the 'floor' or minimal value it can be set to with no input and you can first hear the noise go away.
Turn off one of the two gates. If you have to run two gates in series your signal chain is messed up. Preferably the global one, since you have more controls in the global one. If you also have some hissy noise riding on top of the gate you could add a filter. Run the gate/filter first in your chain, if you are running gates further down the chain your gain staging is screwed up.
Also: turn down the gain and eliminate sources of noise at the input. Realistically, noise in a guitar signal chain is typically noise at the input that is being amplified by the amp, real or virtual and the more preamp gain you have the more audible it will be. So, anything you can do to lower the noise floor at the input or in your interface is your best investment by far.
Hre's a quick reference that describes what a noise gate is and what some typical gate controls do:

@elric you’re runningnthe positive grid noise filter pedal post global noise gate?
-
I actually don’t see a global noise gate option in Bias fx mobile

Another question. If you’re using a Bias amp 2 model inside of Bias FX what happens to the noise gate setting on the BA2 profile?

;))) … and not the badest question!
